My batteries are 2004 as well and still come up to 6.4. The boiling is the desulfate/equalizing part of the charging cycle.
The epsom salt thing has been beat to death here and there's lots of posts on it. IMO, it works on some but not many, basically a waste of time. Run your batteries for another year and start saving for the new set.
