When it cuts down on power is it more like you let off the gas pedal a little or like you just shut off the engine? Does it backfire or feel like the engine is kicking in/out? I would start with tune up items first.

Is the engine still reving when it cuts out? If so, it may be something as simple as a belt slipping.
