Plans for a new garage
 

I've been working out of a 24x28 garage with an upstairs but am beginning to quickly run out of room! :shock:

I originally planned on building a comfortable size 18x25 single car garage with a rack on our second property. This would be to work on the cars and keep the old shop for golf carts and parts storage only. Well I don't know what happened but those plans almost immediately grew into a 20x51 garage with an additional 10x30 office/lounge area and a full bath. Man cave!! :lol: Now I just need to find where the game room goes! Here's a rough plan I drew up last night. Haven't changed the first half to 30' long yet. The truck is 17' and uh the miniature suv's in the back are scaled down to simulate golf carts. :lol: Strangely enough they didn't have a golf cart icon to pick. :?

Isn't it the correct ratio where your garage should always be bigger than your house? :help: :lol:
Any tips or suggestions? Will 4" concrete w/ gravel base be sufficient enough to support a car rack? Where can I find a Coke machine that dispenses free drinks? :lol:

I don't know much about golf carts but I do know about construction. Typical 4" conc slab will have a strength of 2500 psi@ 30 days cure. You are correct to consider the material below it a good base should be compacted to 90% (that is hard as the hubs of he11) because if the ground under the slab settles well, the concrete is not gonna bridge it for long without cracking and settling also. Is the lift stationary or mobile? Pinpoint loads should be beefed up. A lift with a cart on it is okay on a gd 2500 (or 3000# psi) floor but, a car or truck on a lift should be a thicker floor. Consider 6" with reinforcing wire or fiberglass reinforcing threads in the conc. 8)

What is your ground like and what are your typical frost levels? All these are factors to be considered...:thumbup:

I got a coke machine in my game room I just leave the door unlocked so people can just open it up and remove them off the rack. It will only despense the glass bottles and they cost to much to give away anyways.:-P

What I have found out about garages (aka Man's play pen) is that no matter how big they are, they are never big enough! LOL It seams that if there is an empty spot we will find some to put in there and then something else shows up that we got to have but just don't have room for it. Must be a gearhead thing. The design looks good. Good luck your building of it.

Before I had my 40 x 50 “man cave” built I spent a year talking to other man cave owners, I gathered a wealth of information, the best advise I got was “think long term”.

I agree. I've been making a list of what to aquire for my Dawg Hause for several months. Things like a compressor, lift, welder etc. Then I'll know how much space I'll need and build it twice as big!

Did you remember to put in radiant floor heat. Here in ohio a must for working in the cave come mid Jan. Keeps your feet warm yet your upper body comfort zone is cool enough to work in t shirt and not perspire.
