Precharge necessary?

Sorry for asking this again, I did get a reply on here before that a Precharger was not necessary. However, Ian says that it is (see his comments below). Can anyone help clarify? Does the Precharge have anything to do with converting to Lithium? It seems that it is primarily related to the motor and the controller, both of which will stay the same during the lithium conversion. I don't mind paying a little more to do it right, but he even says there is more wiring; which concerns me. I don't want to make it any more tricky than necessary. Thanks

Re: Precharge necessary?

From Ian:

The Alltrax controllers do require an external precharging system. On all their example wiring diagrams they just show a resistor permanently across the main contactor, which works OK but isn’t quite as safe as a staged precharger. I’d probably recommend getting the EVMS with built-in precharger and using that if you can (would involve slightly different wiring).

Re: Precharge necessary?

What I answered in your other thread is that the Alltrax Controller provides its own pre-charge (not always using a resistor), not that pre-charge was not necessary.

The pre-charge that Zeva sells is not designed to work the way Golf Carts are wired.

Re: Precharge necessary?

Thanks Sergio, I get it now. I placed the order with Ian and went with no precharger, and got the Hall effect 660a sensor. Now going to focus on finding a charger. Heavily leaning towards the charger from Elcon that DaveTM suggested in another thread.
