G9 frame repair w/swing arm drop

5 Attachment(s)
Time to replace the cross member after 16 years of rusting and corroding from poor battery maintenance (before it was mine). The material was getting thin and my first design swing arm drop added some leverage. Check out these cracks.

Old piece out and preping for the new one.

2" sq x 3/16 tube. About 3 times the thickness of the stock tube. :-D

Attachment 60470

High tech engineering  Using 4" sq x 1/4 tube.

Attachment 60471

Fit up with the swing arm in place and ready to tack.

LOOKS GREAT .. very clean and simple.

How far down/back did you go with swingarm?

I've got mine figured at 4D/2B.Let me know if this is about right.

Gussets are on, grit blasted, primed and tacked to the frame rails.

Your work looks top-notch. 8)
Those new mounts and crossmember should hold up for another 16 years. :-D 32 years if you continue to take care of it the way you do now. 8) 8)

why did you primer it before its fully welded? If you blasted it then you will have to grind that area for the bead to be any good when you are ready to finish it....maybe I'm readin things wrong but to finish the bead wouldnt have been hard and if you just tacked it incase you need to relocate then why primer it?

The last pic shows a finished cross member. The only welding left is to affix
the C M to the frame rails. No primer in that area. Location is positive,
notice I left the 2 front stock gussets and radiused the ends of the new C M.
Nice tight fit.
