Hello! Looking at a G1 tonight
 

Hello everyone!
My wife has been wanting a golf cart for quite some time and now I am actively looking for one. I found a G1 close to home that looks to be in really good condition. It will only run by by delivering fuel to the carb by use of an inline primer that was installed by the current owner. Sounds to me like the fuel pump needs to be cleaned out / rebuilt or replaced.

We have agreed on a price of $600 pending my inspection tonight.

Does this sound like a reasonable price or maybe even a great deal if the only issue is infact the fuel pump?

I have been reading up on G1's and have learned how to indentify the year, which I will do tonight.

I am wondering if I would be better off buying a newer model? From what I can find, there is a slight frame modification that needs to be made for clutch clearance when installing a lift on the G1's. I'm OK with that, looks minor and I can cut and weld or heat and beat.

Just not sure if I should be steering clear of a G1 or not.

What I want to do is lift, 4"-6", larger tires, remove cargo box and install rear seats. The use would be light trails and fields and campgrounds.

The G1 is a great cart. That's why I own two of them. $600 seems to be a fair price as long as the carts not beat to hell. Definitely need to get rid of that primer for the gas and find out whats wrong with it. All sports sales a 4 inch lift that is completely bolt on with no cutting and welding as long as the cart is 79 to 84. Good luck and let us know if you pick it up

Great, thank you for the information! I will report back. I hope it works out. I was told that there is a person "maybe coming" to look at it today and if he no shows or doesn't buy it, I'm next....so, I am hoping he doesn't show up.

I purchased an 86 G1 for $600 and I think I got a great deal. New paint, looks very good, but does need some "flash" That's only one of my winter projects. I also have a 68 Harley 3wheeler to get working on.

Well, the deal worked out and I brought the G1 home last night! The wife and kids did a few laps around the house and loved it. There are a few things that are at the front of the list on this one:

The fuel delivery issue stated in my first post....I did not find this to be an issue last night, but the tank is full to the top and I am wondering if it is just gravity feeding itself right now and will stall when the tank empties to a point that is level with the carb inlet? What really concerns me about this is that if fuel pump does need work and right now I am gravity feeding, could that mean the pump isn't pulling in any of the 2 stroke oil out of that reservoir?

Does the fuel pump also serve as the oil injector pump?

I would love any opinions or tips:thumbup:

I think I should pull the fuel pump and at least open it up and clean it out. The hose from the case to the pump looks old while the others look new, I will also replace that. The PO told me the crank seals have been replaced.

I am also thinking about abandoning the oil reservoir and mixing the fuel myself...I am nervous something could fail and she starts running off of straight fuel.:shock:

You may want to ask someone else about engine problems, a mechanic I'm not. But I'm pretty sure that the gas and oil has separate pumps..
Go back into the general forum area and ask...there are some great guys on here that will help you out ..

Yep, separate pumps for the oil injection and fuel.

Many people do away with the oil injection system and pre-mix their fuel. Mostly for peace of mind and when I ran a stock G1 I did it also.

You can take the fuel pump apart and clean it out easily. It's usually all that is needed, other than the lines, to get the cart running and keeping it running well.

There are other problems with these older machines that can cause problems but if the seals have been changed and it's running good then I'd just do the injector elimination and clean out the fuel pump and replace any older lines.

It's a clean looking cart and you did good, especially if your family is enjoying it right out of the gate.

I'd look at finding a top for it or fab one up. I don't think I'd like not having a top myself, I've run both ways and like the sun not beating down on me.

Beerman I think you are right.....I searched around a bit this morning found posts mentioning an injector pump, so now I believe the fuel pump is only responsible for fuel....which makes me feel better about letting the kids run it around the yard last night.:lol:

I'm getting pretty excited about this golf cart! Its fun to have a project that the whole family can enjoy! I showed my wife a picture of a lifted cart...."Oh yeah, do that" she said! Will do dear:lol:
