89 EZ go gas key left on
 

My son turned the key on two weeks ago when I was at my summer home and it was on the whole time now it won't start.
I don't know if leaving the key on had anything to do wtih this.
I charged the battery and still nothing.
Any help would be appreciated.

Unless you have some accessories wired in to the key switch, and the accessories were on, then leaving the key in the on position will not run the battery down.

If your battery was weak before, and sat for a week, than the surface charge can bleed down to a very low level.

You should test the battery voltage by installing it back into the car (if you didn't already), and put your DVM probes on both main leads. Then with the key on, press the gas pedal and observe how low the voltage goes.

Anything below 9v under load, and you should buy a new 26G battery :thumbup:

Shouldn't effect the battery at all, unless you have a micro switch or solenoid stuck on / not working properly. Normally, just leaving the key on is OK

check your connections for being loose, abraided or corrosion

I have accidentally left my 77's key before and it has killed the battery overnight. Not sure if the older electrical systems are much different in this aspect. This was before I added any accessories too. Now I am OCD about making sure the key is taken OUT of the cart (has to be OFF to take out).

I charged the battery and tried to jump and the engine wouldn't crank at all so I was wondering if this could have burnt some contacts in the selector switch for forward and reverse or if something else is going on.

Rotate the drive clutch until the engine is off compression (easy to move the drive clutch forward). Make sure to move it to the beginning of the low restriction range.

Then try to crank the engine.

It sounds like your brushes in the starter/generator are worn. The test above is a quick cheat. To be absolutely sure you can remove the dust covers off the end cap of the starter/generator. The 4 rubber covers... don't worry about the one under neath, just pull the three (top, both sides). Make sure the brush ends are not inside of their brackets.
