Need to fish for the bearing retainer in a GE motor
 

It was too late - I had already taken the 2 screws out by the speed magnet before I read not to do it.

Now I need to fish for the bearing retainer in a GE motor on my 2008 Club Car Precedent.

Any pointers or tips?

Take one of the screws to the hardware store and buy some longer ones. Start the long screws into the retainer, put the lid on and tighten it down, remove one of the long screws and put the short one in. Tighten it up, remove the other long one and put the short one in, and tighten it up.

I have fished for an hour with a 3 inch long screw but no luck.

If I use a focused light beam and a mirror I can look down the screw holes and see what looks like a open area longer than the short screw length that ends in a flat plate?

I have tried to dig into the retainer plate in order to pivot it around on its shaft hoping to reveal the threads. I have tried to dig on it to raise it while trying to find threads with the longer screw. No luck yet.

Should it pivot around - and the screw threads will reveal themselves that way?

Is it hard to move the bearing retainer because motor weight is bearing down on it?

If I were to push the cart around in this condition will it wreck the motor?

You're not supposed to go fishing with the lid on. Take the cap off the motor and you can actually see the bearing retainer. Start both screws and bolt the cap back on. Then you'll have the retainer attached to the two screws. Remove them one at a time and start the short screws and tighten them up.

TahoeDawg is RIGHT! You MUST take the cap off the motor and you can actually see the bearing retainer.:thumbup:8)

I know this is an old thread but I did the same **** thing. Can you remove the motor cap while it’s still mounted or do I have to pull the entire motor ?

Does anyone know of a video that shows the process of using the long screws to secure the retainer plate and then replacing with the shorter screws? I am messing it up. When I take the long screw out to replace it with the shorter screw that side of the retainer plate sags and I cannot get to it with the shorter screw.

Here is a video of someone changing the brushes on a GE motor...Around the 2:39 minute mark in the video he uses a rag to put the retainer on so you can get the idea...
