Broken rod?

So... If you take the spark plug out on an old kf82, can you see the top of the piston? If that is what I am seeing, when I manually turn the drive clutch, the piston does not move. I am thinking broken rod... i can only turn the motor over about half way by hand, then it is too difficult to move. the s/g wont turn it over at all. This motor has been apart before, but I forgot if the piston lines up with the spark plug hole or if it is off to the side. Just want to know what I am seeing...

Yep. Broken rod is what happened to my cart (which was the reason the the cart was given to me in the first place). Is there a dent in the back side of the engine block where the rod tried to escape?

Hopefully it's salvageable. Sometimes the rod breaking takes a nice chunk of the bottom of the cylinder or cracks it. I've got my fingers crossed for ya.....

Re: Broken rod?

On my cart the rod did chunk out a decent size portion of the cylinder, but when I rebuilt it, I lucked out and the broken part of the cylinder didn't reach high enough to affect compression. The rebuild attempt failed because I used a replacement crankshaft from another used motor that was apparently egged-out. It would knock at higher rpms and when I pulled the side cover, the rod had already loosened up after just a few hours of driving. Live and learn...
