Install a power port on Precedent
 

Hey guys, I'm pretty new to the Cart world so I'm coming here to get some info,
I want to add a 12v power port for charging my cellphone or plugging in GPS etc..I want to mount it flush on the dash but my question is what's best port to use and can I wire it straight to the battery pack or do I need to buy a converter? I plan on eventually adding under body lights and in future a radio so if you guys could help out with this I would greatly appreciate it..

Since you want to add several other accessories. I say go with a 25 or 30 amp reducer and use a juction/fuse box to link each item to the whole pack.

Take a look at my album and you will see a pic of how I have used mine. I have a 2002 DS 48V cart. The reducer is connected to the pack and the fuse box. Each item is connected to the fuse pack. I use standard light kit, an LED light kit, a stereo and a 12v power port.

I do have a kill switch in place so the reducer is not pulling from the pack during times that I am not using any of the accecories.

The biggest plus to this is that the system pulls power, evenly, across the entire pack; not just a couple of the batteries.

Only other way to go would be to install a seperate 12v battery to run everything, instead of the pack.

Most of the folks on here will suggest you install an Auxillary Battery especially if you plan to install a stereo system. I have a reducer that is just running lights because I don't want to pull one battery more than the others (I have a 4x12 volt Precedent). There are many postings discussing how to install reducers and aux batts, just do a search. I would suggest at least one of these two options for your setup.

Thanks for the info..I see I need to buy a converter or extra battery but where would you mount it at on the Precedent as there is pretty much no room in battery compartment for anything..

rear bag well.... Keep in mind that that battery will need to be charged on it's own.... If you will not run your lights or radio all night, I still like the reducer solution and use the main pack. Proper use calls for charging after every use anyway. will you be running the extra stuff that much?

Others will say use the pack for it's intended purpose, running the cart. I won't argue that either.

For me, I don't want to worry about running a second charger on the aux battery or filling my bag well with one.

As long as the installation is done right, either option will solve your problem.

The other accessories will only be used occasionally the under body lights at night every so often and then the radio when I install one will be used when cruising but not overkill with it, so where would you mount the converter and fuse block? Sorry for all the stupid questions but I really haven't messed with carts that much but Iam mechanically inclined as I do all my own repairs when needed and I guess Iam just the type that likes to do things for myself if at all possible... My DS does not have a box around the battery pack like many newer carts. The reducer is mounted behing batt 1, on the right side. It's kinda set above/infront of the right rear wheel well area. The fuse box is mounted to the upper part of the crossmember that runs behind the entire batt pack.
My guess is that you will have to play around with it little. It may also depend on how much cable is coming out of the reducer? If not much, I assume it can't be too far away from batt 1.
when I have better light, I will try to post a pic. for now, I just have the pic of the fuse box in my album.

First pic: See the blue box just behind batt 1 (right side of cart.) Pic 2: Same pic as in my album. Positive main goes through an on/off switch than to the reducer. Green wire goes from reducer to fuse box. Neg main goes from reducer to neg on fuse box and to neg terminal on batt 6. All other wires you see are the poss and neg wires of each accessory. On mine, I still have room for three more items..... This pic was before I cleaned everything up... All the wires are twist tied up quite nicely now....

If you go with a larger converter to support the radio, etc. I suggest you mount in the space behind the battery tub, where the motor is. It is quite large and pretty well protected, and most of the converters are fairly water resistant - just check to make sure. I have a smaller converter so was able to fit in the area with the electronics - between the batteries on an 07 precedent.
