48v HD solenoid
I know these are rated for 48v, but what is the maximun voltage it will safely handle. The original 36v on my cart worked great at 48 volts, so I was thinking there has to be some extra duty built into these. In particular I am asking about the White Rodger #586 solenoid. It has silver contacts. Thanks, Mike

Re: 48v HD solenoid
If you can keep the activation coil on 48 volts you should be able to push 72 volts through it without issue. I wouldn't put 72 volts though the activation coil, I don't think it will last very long.

Re: 48v HD solenoid
Thanks, Thats the info I was looking for. I'm trying to replace my czonka at a cheaper price.

Re: 48v HD solenoid
Put a 100uF capacitor across the large posts of the solenoid, this will help the 48V solenoid break 72 volts in the event of an emergency OFF.
The cap does the exact same thing as a condenser on the old automotive points... yes I remember setting my points on my car. |

See Nate....thats why you need to be here more.....to keep us all in line and to not get shocked. LOL!

100uF capacitor What exactly is this and what does the designation mean? |
Re: 48v HD solenoid
I ordered a capacitor and diode with solenoid. How do I tell the rating of capacitor. (I am 900 miles from capacitor now). Thanks, Mike

Re: 48v HD solenoid
Oh, and I also remember setting points on distributor. GM was nice when they came out with the "window" on cap, so you wouldn't have to remove cap to set points.

Re: 48v HD solenoid
I had an old Buick (my first car) with the distributor in the front and the cap window. Piece of cake to set as long as you kept your hands out of the fan, which was metal, not plastic and always ran! I hit the fan ONCE, brushed up on my French and never did that again.
The capacitor will say 100uF on the side and might have a polarity designation. 100uF is 100 micro-farads; if it is polarized and you put it in backwards it will go off like a black-cat firecracker. It's all fun and games until someone gets electrolyte in their eye! Oh and make sure it can handle full charge voltage or the firecracker thing again. Hmm, maybe these caps are not such a good idea... |
Re: 48v HD solenoid
I'm in the procees of converting to 48v. I think I need a White Rodgers 586-907. Is this correct? The website I found this solenoid is Allied Electronics. Here's the link to the one I think I need.
