Star Cart 22F - Street Legal in GA

Hi All,

I'm new to this site - been posting on the "other" buggies site for a few years, happy to see an active Star related forum over here.

So in December I upgraded from my old 90 EZGO Marathon to a 2009 Star Cart 22F. This is all stock and qualified for the 2009 LSV tax credit. $8300 msrp, $5300 tax credit. Got $1000 for my old Marathon... so that's a new cart for about $2k!

You guys have probably already seen this model and paint scheme. Hope that I can contribute some valuable info as I push this cart to it's limits.

So far it seems solid and strong. 48v on 8 Trojan T105's, 5.5hp motor with a Curtis 400amp controller on 4ga cables. Lift, heavy duty leafs, racks, brush guard, flip down seat, fenders and more.

What makes it street legal are lights, brake lights, blinkers, mirrors, full glass windshield, horn and seat belts. Yes, it's basically an EZGO clone with parts made in China, (some assembly and sold out of South Carolina) but so far it is quiet and quick.

It was a little top heavy and gotta get used to it on the steep stuff. Notice on the pics at the end that I removed the rack off the top...both to help the balance and also so it can fit in my garage! It's a tall cart - over 7' - so beware if you plan to park it in a standard home garage.

This thing will get a work out around my house and neighborhood. More updates to come...

Here's a tricky and steep creek crossing that has some thick mud and stumps to work around. The Star Cart had no problem here (unlike my buddy's EZGO) ha ha Chris!

Here's some information for those of you in GA who want to become street legal with your new or used Low Speed Vehicle (LSV) or Neighborhood Electric Vehicle (NEV).

http://motor.etax.dor.ga.gov/forms/p...les_Manual.pdf (Page 47, and the need to have an Amber Light Permit)

http://dps.georgia.gov/00/article/0,...627488,00.html (how to obtain an Amber Light Permit)

At your county tag office, you will need your Certificate of Origin with a VIN, proof of insurance and an Amber Light Permit. When asking the representative about registration, call it a Low Speed Vehicle. That is the familiar term that they understand.

Any plans to put yours on the road? If so, you have to get one of those little amber lights on put on the roof of it, plus the permit, I think it is 5 bucks or so.

Yes, I'm now fully street legal. Had to send off a $2 money order for the amber light permit. The tag office seemed surprised when I showed up with it. The decal actually says "Emergency Light Permit."

Geico insures it for about $10 / month... so with the amber permit and the insurance I was able to register it. The tag office sent me a full sized license plate. My Avatar is a scan from a portion of that plate. I'm not sure where to mount it... a big *** plate on a cart? I thought it might be a smaller tag like you see on some of the Peachtree City carts.

Torque seems strong... better than my old Raptor / Alltrax setup. Top speed I'm not as worried about...maybe 22ish...

Only thing I really think it needs is new wheels - and maybe a size bigger wheels / tires.

Hey I apologize GEO, I was so busy looking at your pictures and talking on the phone with a customer and I typed a question you had clearly already addressed in your first post about the amber light. Ooops, :?

Thanks for sharing the info.
