Want to build a 35 MPH cart
 
OK guys, I thinking on what it would take to build a 35 MPH max cart for use on county roads? I would use it to run around to the store, post office, etc. My next door neighbor is a CHP and will get me the check list for street legal.
  • What would start with (Series, PDS, DCS)?
  • What changes would you make?
  • What voltage would you shoot for?

36v series cart converted to 48v, 8:1 gears, 700 amp controller, HD switch and solenoid should do it.
You mentioned CHP, if you're in California it will be hard to get your cart street legal without a real VIN number.

At 35 MPH can you get up to 30 minutes of battery pack life?

If I understand, a stock series motor is 2850 rpm @ 36v. 48v gives +25%, that would be 3500 rpm. Calculator gives that 24.1 mph with 18.5" tires. Am I correct that it would take a 27" tire for 35 mph?

48v is a 33.33% increase (36v x 1.33 = 47.88v), makes a stock 2850 motor spin up to 3800 rpm.
I posted incorrectly before, add 6:1 gears and on 18.5" tires your speed would be 34.9mph. That being said, it is doubtful that a stock motor with 6:1 gears would have enough torque to get up to that speed.
The tire size increase would do the same as an axle ratio change and the torque would still be a problem.

I know that to voltage increase is 33%. I heard form Scottyb that the increase in speed and torque was about 25% with the 36v to 48v conversion. Are you saying that the increase is linear?

Theoretically, yes. Practically, it depends on the ability of your batteries, controller, solenoid, cables and FNR switch to deliver the power to the motor. The motor also has to be able to handle the power delivered.
Scotty's 25% number is a non-scientific, seat of the pants, practical experience, realistic number that is probably more accurate.

If I was starting from 36v and going to 48v, I would use 8 X 6v batteries, not 6 X 8v. At any voltage I would likely go for 8 batteries.

  • 64v - 8 X 8v
  • 96v - 8 X 12v

Stock brakes are VERY ineffective at high speeds. They are designed to stop the cart with 2 passengers at 14mph and not much more. The kind of cart you are talking about needs MANY SAFETY improvements. Brakes being one of them.

6v batteries store more amperage per battery....225ah 6v and 190ah 8v typically
