FE350 timing issue

Cart running rough, backfiring hard to start like timing is advanced.I removed the spark plug and flywheel shroud.I turned flywheel while putting a wooden dowel in the sparkplug hole to get to top dead center on the power stroke.when the piston travels up the cylinder just before TDC the magnet on the flywheel has already past the legs on the ignition coil."module".Ok that shows signs of sheared flywheel key so i remove flywheel and key is not sheared. So with timing off that bad i removed side engine cover thinking the camshaft or the crank gear that turns the camshaft has sheared a keyway.well cam is in tack and crank gear is fine.Am i missing something here.Any help appreciated.Oh this engine has tappets instead of hydraulic lifters and it has no rev limiter.
