Battery light/charger
 

I have been reading this board on and off for a while now and it seems great. Anyways, I have a 48v club car. The battery light constantly stays lit up and never turns off, even after charging. Also, when charging the charger never automatically kicks off. I charger for 12 hours last and the charger was still running. What could be the issue? Thanks

It is on because it is telling you your charge is not complete. It will run up to 16 hours before auto-shut-off. You are either needing to let it get fully charged or your batteries are bad and not capable of taking a complete charge.

I checked the voltages today after waiting 24 hours of not being charged. The batteries read 8.64 on all except one which read 8.69. The total was 51.9. Would this still be a battery issue? Thanks

Did you read the literature I pointed you to earlier? If so, in the Powerdrive manual it explained what the light is and when and why it comes on.

And your charge would be skeptical to say the least since you are turning off the charger manually and it is never automatically completes as designed to do.

Prior to next charge sequence, I would disconnect my pack for 20 mins to resaet the OBC and then let it charge for 16 hours or until it shuts off if sooner.

If you suspect a BAD OBC then you need to post all the details of your cart so we can try and help you diagnose it.

I did read through the literature along with why the light would be in but from the sounds of reading though it, it sounds like it should just come on temporarily not stay on. I also do not have that charger, I have the Schauer 48 volt battery charger.

The golf cart is a club car ds made in 2001. I will disconnect the battery back next time I go to charge it.

I am not familiar with your charger design. Your OBC may already be bypassed or that may be a specially designed charger to work with OBC's.

Someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think Schauer makes an OBC compatible charger. Yes it plugs in and does charge your batteries, but the light is on because the OBC doesn't "see" it and control the chargers functions. I've seen similar before when the OBC has not been completely bypassed. Does your cart have a second wire on the pack negative that goes to the charger port negative?

From the quick read I just did of the Schauer charger I think you are right meimk. One site went as far as publishing instructions for bypassing the OBC (with one jumper wire) in order to use their chargers (including the Schauer).

So, cahagg01, I think the others are probably right and the light no longer does what it is supposed to do and can be ignored.

Anyway, it appears that the charger has its own computer and will switch off when the batteries are charged so you should leave it on and wait for it to switch off automatically. As Nole said, this could take up to 16 hours or more so don't be too hasty to turn it off. Put it on for a full day and if it hasn't turned off by then you can assume that there's something wrong.

Your battery voltages seem pretty good (but you should measure them 12 hours after the charger has been turned off as that will give you the correct voltages). It sounds like you might have been pretty close to the automatic shut-off time when you turned it off manually.

So, check the water levels and put the charger on for 24 hours. It should have turned itself off by then. Unhook the charger and read the voltage levels 12 hours later (without using the cart in the meantime). If the battery voltages are at least as good as you have quoted then you don't have any problems.

If Sergio reads this he may want to give more expert advice.

There is a wire that runs directly from the charger port to the negative battery terminal. Does this mean the OBC is bypassed renderings the battery light useless? Thanks

Yes , your OBC is bypassed. Your OBC is not seeing charge cycle, so it believes your batteries are dead from non charge
