Club Car only goes full speed w/o ignition omn

My 1987 Club Car decided to drive by itself today, at only full speed in forward.
Turning the ignition key off was of no help as it still continued to run. I was able to get it into neutral, but I pretty much smoked my brakes. I currently have it locked down with the parking brake, but without any key in it, it still wants to go. If I shift it into reverse, the reverse audible warning sound is made and only stops when I disconnect the batteries. Can anyone suggest to me what might be wrong? Before this episode, the cart would jerk really hard when first starting to go in forward and would stabilize once it got up to speed.

Thanks in advance.

You have a couple of problems with solenoids. The one closest to the drivers side is the MASTER, it is stuck on. The earlier problem you had was probably one or two next to the master not working... they are speeds basically, so that when the 1st one is out you start suddenly in 2nd gear....... with 2 or more solenoids gone bad I suggest replacing them all as a group or this problem will likely come back to haunt you at 3rd and 4th gear later.

Thank you Scotty. I appreciate the info and I will replace them all. Today is another issue. Yesterday I tried cleaning all of the contacts, tightening bolts, etc. Today the cart will only go in reverse. In forward it I can hear each solenoid click in sequence as I apply more pressure on the accelerator, but that is all that happens. In reverse it is fine. Would this issue also be related to the 5 pack of solenoids? PS: I only hear the solenoids clicking with the ignition switch on. With it off I can barely hear a slight clicking sound, which may just be the accelerator switch itself.

Might you be able to recommend the best place to get the solenoids? I am in NJ, and of course don't mind ordering it online.

Again, thank you so much. Neil

I'm glad you hear the 5 small clicks coming from the accelerator box under the driver's seat. In that silver box ( attached to the frame) is a micro-switch for each solenoid.... and there is a micro or 2 on the F&R that switches the negative current to the solenoid activation circuit... it was a good system for it's time. Remember the solenoid closest to the driver's side is the master... it switches the power supply to the other speed solenoids...... it seems complicated but it is not once you see how it works, it is just 1980s technology..... I have new solenoids if you need. But you need to check the micros first and make sure they are working ... continuity test their switching beginning with the F&R micros. Avoid taking the accelerator box apart if possible... it is a can of worms  Are all of the solenoids clicking now? Test this with the rear wheels up off the floor! Each solenoid click should result in an audible & visual increase in rear wheel speed....

I gotta go out on a call, Tom can help you figure out what is and is not working

Hi Tom and Scotty.

All of the solenoids do click lightly with the key switch off. With the key switch on, all 5 of them click loudly, and I can physically feel them actuate by putting my fingers on the solenoids. From driver's side to passenger's side they appear to click in sequence, but the cart will not drive forward. Only reverse at this point...opposed to the out of control forward yesterday that would not stop even with the key off and pulled out. Only way to stop it yesterday was to put it in neutral and jam down on the brakes.

Re: Club Car only goes full speed w/o ignition omn

Sounds like the sticky solenoid is unstuck today.... and the forward F&R micro is bad?

How are you with a voltmeter? Can you test the F&R micros as suggested?

The 'light' clicks are the micro switches, not the solenoids ..... Just because the solenoid clicks does not guarantee it works.
