48v club car charger wont shut off
 

I have a 2000 48v Club Car with a Lester Charger ... After 24 hours of charging the charger stays at 5 amps. At that time with charger still on i have a reading of 54 Volts. AFter 30 minutes i have a reading about 48-49 volts. I have 6 8 volt t-875 trojan batteries.. The four outside batterys read about 8 volts after 30 minutes. They are dated A6. The two inside batteries are dated E6 and reading are about 7.7-7.8 volts.. Any ideas why charger wont shut off.. thanks

Charger won't shut off if you you have one bad cell .... The fully charged pack should read 50.93 about 45 minutes after charging stops. The initially high readings are false and they need to settle for this time..... A hydrometer from the auto parts house or a load tester From HF or ? will tell the tale.

thanks ScottyB for quick answer.... Can Golf Cart perform ok if you just have one bad cell? As i was saying the 2 inside batteries were replaced because the 4 outside batteries are A6 and 2 inside are E6 --- All outside have the same reading after 30 minutes and 2 inside both read 7.8 volts... I guess what im asking can Golf Cart after charging with a bad cell perform ok? Mine seams fine after charging for 24 hours and then running for 15-18 miles before changing again... Just charger wont shut off... I will get something to ck cell and maybe i can take this charger over to a friends with a 48v cart and see if it will shut off on his club car...... thanks again... The 2 batteries at 7.8v 30 minutes after a full charge are goners :|. I guess the others are around 8.3 or 8.4 (8.49 is 100%) There is probably nothing wrong with your charger it is not seeing enough voltage to shut off and it is correct. The real problem here is the charger is overcharging the good batteries trying to reach a full charge level and then when you run 15 miles you are over taxing the good batts because they are carrying the weak ones. All of this overcharging and overtaxing will result in a shortened life for the good batts... Do not replace the 3 yr old batteries with new you must find 2 used good batteries to add to this pack or you will be replacing all of them soon .....please post the readings for all of the batteries 30 minutes after 6-8 hrs. of charging.

Hi ScottyB again -- All right -- the cart had about 2.5 miles before i just got done charging for 6 hours..... about 3-4 hours into the charge the amp actually came down under 5 amps for awhile -- maybe to 2-3 amps but right at 6 hours of charge is was charging 5 amp on the button.... let say the outside batteries 8v t875 trojans behind the driver is 1 and 2 -- behind the passender is 5 and 6 and the 2 middle batteries which for an unknown reason have been change to E6.. 1,2,5 and 6 are all A6.. One other point i have forgot to mention battery 4 alway had water/acid on top of it.. a few ounces anyway... after 6 hours there was just a little tho on battery 4... After driving a few miles there could be a few ounces on battery 4.... Anyway after 6 hours batteries 1,2,5 and 6 (A6's) all had 8.05 charge. battery 3 had a 7.95 and battery 4 had 7.90... The Total batteries in Series at this pt is 49.6 volts.... So what is this telling you... thanks again... Allan

Hello ScottyB -- still waiting on ya......... Im trying to get another charger and cart the same as mine to swap charger to see what happens..... I cant hurt the other cart or charger can I if my charger is bad? thanks

Hello ---- after using another 2001 club car that batteries and charger is ok, found out that using my charger on his cart (2001) it shut off fine.... Mine cart using his charger stays at 5 amps no matter how long you leave the charger charging... Which is saying my charger is ok.... Again -- Based on my previous statements on voltages after 20 min. of charging 8 hours do you think i have a battery problem? (Even tho my cart does run at 20-22 mpg and seems fine) or a problem with the OBC?

You absolutely have bad batteries. None of the batteries after charging should be as low as you stated. click on the link provided here and follow the chart across for 8V batteries. Your bad batteries are causing the charger to never shut off. Dont mess around, suck it up and go buy all new batteries at once, dont start doing half *** job and try to put in one or two batteries.

Full charge should be complete in about 5-7 hours under normal conditions. Your batteries are dying..... just a matter of time now? #4 may be overful?

Last nite i left the charger on for about 20 hours.. when i turned it off amps on charger was about 12... i checked the batteries and everything was very hot and the batteries were reading about 12-13 volts and way high for the whole system.. what going on? Is my cart safe to drive... right now i have the lights on to try and bring voltages down --- help!!!
