Tired of fighting water on my Alltrax conecttions
 

Here’s the deal. I don’t have a roof on my cart as it’s a hunting cart. I’ve bolted rubber flaps over the controller, but a heavy rain still finds its way into all the connections and puts it into a limp mode. I’ve tried dielectric grease but the water still penetrates and shorts the system out.

After some research there are certain types of silicon that have dielectric properties that could seal the connections and keep them from getting wet “and me losing power”.

Anyone see any issue with me filling the plug ins to the alltrax with this type of silicon? If the connection doesn’t get wet it’s fine, if not, I’m unplugging stuff to dry out just to make it back.

Keep in mind I’m in Louisiana, I need a solution to seal the water off the connections. I’ve moved the controller 2 times, have a metal splash guard under it, but water always finds its way to the connections.

Silicon? Seems like it would fix this issue?

What about using a hot glue gun to seal every thing. It will pull off if you need to but I think it might help.:roll:

I use my cart 95% for hunting and I go out in the rain\snow and thru standing water and on occasion I ford a creek or two.

My cart does have a roof, but my controller is shielded as much as possible from water splashing onto it and the seat protects water from above.

Maybe a picture of your controller location would be helpful?

Alltrax promotes the use of dielectric silicone sealer on the main harness plug etc. in wet conditions.

In a pinch you can use Water Displacement 40. aka WD40

You can seal the back of the plugs with silicone or RTV sealer but you can’t use that on the pins inside the plug.
Lots of dielectric grease inside the plug will keep water out.

I’ve had some equipment over the years with the white Molex style plugs that are basically open to everything. They corrode and get dirt in them and I’ve seen a few actually catch on fire. Whenever I have to deal with those now I always clean them thoroughly with electric contact cleaner and then cover the back where the wires go in with black or grey RTV sealer. Get around and in between all of the wires with it so it’s totally closed off on the back. After that dries I fill all the pins inside with dielectric grease. Never have a problem with them after that.

Good advise guys. I’ve ordered some 388 Dielectric silicon to coat the connections. I’ve tried regular dielectric grease, but water still finds its way through it. It doesn’t take much moisture on the connections to cause a “short”. When I covered the whole controller with a rubber flap, even the morning condensation would cause issues.

I’ll take some pics and report back how the 388 works.

Once the connector is completely filled with grease no water will enter.
The water can only enter space occupied by air. For a molex connector be sure to fill the inside to the point it oozes out when plugged in and the outside where the wires enter the plug.

Well now my solinoid isn’t clicking on correctly and getting really hot. Just ordered a new one from you Scotty. Don’t want to be stranded on the next trip out. It’s always something
