poor acceleration

Just bought an '89 Club Car AG. It starts fine and runs good at low speeds. If I try to accelerate to full speed, it loads up, or floods with lots of black exhaust smoke and bogs down. I have removed the air filter and inspected with a light through the center. Seem O.K. Blew it out with air pressure. No dust or debris. The choke isn't staying closed. I also pulled the plug and the tip and electrode seem to be burning O.K. Soot on the outside edges. Any help would be appreciated. I hope I have at least covered the basics. Sam

You may need to clean your carburetor.

Buickguy, thanks for replying. Do I have to remove it and disassemble to clean, or spray cleaner in the venturi. I still have the air cleaner off. Thanks, Sam

Never had to do the Club Car but figuring its a lot like a motorcycle carb, removal and disassembly will do a better job for sure.

One other thing I'm a little unsure of, will the air/fuel mixture screws or idle adjustment screw have much effect on my problem? If so, the proper adjustment procedure would help a lot. I'm trying to sidestep taking the carburetor apart if I can avoid it.

Using just general carburetor theory, I'd say the pilot setting (A/F mix) only affects the idle mix with lessening effect up to 1/4 throttle. Above that, you are running on deceasing idle jet and increasing main jet.

The carburetor on the Club Car isn't a CV type but the principles are the same.
If you look at these drawing of a Hitachi carburetor used by Yamaha, you can see that some varnish or other crud stuck in the passageways can be not only performance robbing but hard to clean. The throttle usage drawing is a general drawing of a typical variable Venturi carburetor.

Buickguy, Thanks again. Help an old dummy out here. If the jets were clogged, or partially clogged, then wouldn't that cause a gas starving situation rather than a flooding situation? If I understand at all, I was thinking that a misadjusted float would cause flooding by allowing more gas into the engine than it could burn. Also, if the needle seat was clogged or had debris in it it might keep the gas flow from being cut off. I don't know. Just guessing. It looks like I'm going to be taking the carb apart, and I don't know the proper float level. Is there a diagram somewhere I can look at? Again, the engine runs O.K. at low speeds but the problem arises when trying to get up to faster speeds.

A poorly adjusted float will cause issues as well. I don't have any Club Car drawings but I'm sure one of the regulars probably does.

Like I said, I've never pulled apart a Club Car carburetor but I have dealt with Hitachi CV variable venturi carbs on an old Yamaha cycle and lots of old Buick carburetors which were fixed venturi.

If the varnish is in the area of the carburetor that atomizes the fuel, it cause cause the mix to have heavy droplets of fuel instead of a fine mist.
The heavier droplets don't vaporize as well as the fine mist. It shows up like a rich mixture as the heavy drops don't burn completely.

I had that issue in the Hitachi CV. The emulsifier tube was heavily varnished. The cycle wouldn't run well above an idle and was putting out a sooty exhaust and fouling plugs.
Here I colored a drawing showing the Hitachi layout.

Buickguy, thanks again for all of your help. After battling the flu all week, I finally mustered up enough energy to remove and disassemble the carburetor. Found the float laying in the bottom of the bowl. Cleaned the carb good while it was off, reassembled it and it runs just fine. It will now run top speed also.

Glad it worked out.
I noticed Lockman posted a drawing of the FE 290 carburetor. Its a fix Venturi but it might be a good idea to have as a reference. http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/gas-c...arburetor.html
