Secondary battery question

I am looking at purchasing a used 2010 from a local dealer to use for some of my Shriner functions. Since I will be putting a light bar on it for safety reasons as well as a two way radio and some other devices, I am thinking about putting a secondary battery in the cart so that I dont deplete the battery that is already there.

I did this with a previous truck because of some volunteer work I was doing with emergency management as a volunteer for the same reason and that it what got me thinking about doing this with the Yamaha. Has anyone done this and what did you do ?

Thanks,
Ron

Re: Secondary battery question

Ron, the older carts only put out 15 amps, and that is at 4400 rpm. So if driving slow, I could only assume the charging rate of the generator would only be about 3 to 4 amps. I think I would just put a large main battery in the car and go with that.
Good luck!

Re: Secondary battery question

People put a second battery in for stereo systems all the time, it does just what you said. If it takes longer to run them out than your function you are good, just drive it or charge it before you do another show/parade/etc. I would wire the second battery with larger wire is all, maybe 8ga or something in case the primary gets low and power comes from it mostly. Be careful the wire is protected and can't short out. It should be fused at each end on the positive wire, but cart is so small not sure it is necessary. Also note the frame is not ground on these carts unless you make it ground via wire.

You can also try to use LED lights when possible, current draw is considerably less. Amazon and ebay just to name a couple, have a huge selection of lights.
