new batteries voltage

After learning that batteries should never be allowed to drop below 50% capacity, it got me to wondering if all new batteries come HIGHER than that 50% mark. Suppose to pick up new 8V tomorrow, and wondered if I need to take a meter to make sure they are above the 8 volt mark?

They probably are... check the dates and make sure you get the freshest ones and charge the whole pack before you drive the cart at all.

What brand are you buying?

Definitely bring your battery meter and chart. 8.00 volts is only 43% state of charge.

I personally would not accept anything with less than 80% state of charge; which I understand is the point where permanent sulfating can start to set in during long term storage. 80% = 8.33 volts.

Good luck with your new batteries ... and make sure to follow good break in procedures as best as possible (see Scotties website) to achieve a long and prosperous battery life.

Got 6 of the 8VGC, solid red US Batteries. Fresh installed the pack showed 50.3. After the charger was on about 2-3 minutes, it drop to less than 15 volts charging ..... I thought that a good sign.

After I drove 100+ miles and got to the place where I ordered the batteries (he gave me a GREAT deal, $700 OTD), 3 of the batteries read well above 8, and 3 read about 7.7. I got a refund. Called another shop 15 miles away and got these. I preferred paying the extra $80 and getting better batteries.

3 batteries at 7.7 volts !!! That is a 10% state of charge (90% discharged). I can only assume they had been sitting around for a while and some permanent damage had already set in. You did very well running away from this "deal" (or should I say "steal")

The batteries that you got at 50.3 volts, average about 86% state of charge ... you will surely be pleased with those

You demonstrate a very good lesson for others to learn when buying "new" batteries ... bring a voltmeter with you and be picky about what you will accept.

What is the date stamp on your new US Batteries?
