80's club car just clicks

I have a 1985 or 1987 club car.

I took the batteries out so I could test out my:

Now that I got everything moved back all I hear is a bunch of clicking.

when this happened on my Parcar I found out the switch for F/R had gone bad. so I shorted it to forward or reverse.

Someone please tell me something else it could be other than that. Maybe how to test my Solenoids without a spark of doom.

Great solenoid testing procedure in the service manual.

jack the rear up and test the far left solenoid drivers side ( master ) the others are your speeds.........jump the large post on the main one and push pedal down if cart runs replace that solenoid................................8)

Re: 80's club car just clicks

I manually connected each solenoid to energize it. The master did not activate (no click). I shorted the connection there and the cart jerked.

Solenoid Diagnosing:

I went and picked up a replacement and after swapping it out, I still just hear clicking, except now if I manually energize the master (while stepping on accerator) the cart moves.

I think I may have blown the original while I was trying to figure out why the master wasn't firing.....I do remember at least 1 spark of doom. And the old part does not click when activated.

Please don't say accelerator switch....is a pain in the arce to get at...

Here is the deal with the solenoid carts...... Each solenoid has it's own micro-switch which energizes the contact coil inside the solenoid .... There are 5 micros in a box at the end of the gas peddle linkage.... this is one of the hardest systems for some people to fix.... once you understand how it works it gets easier. here are the diagrams of the system.....

Thanks ScottyB
So accelerator switches? ****. Very hard to work on.
http://i853.photobucket.com/albums/a...s/03bf4357.jpg

That green wire in the pic goes to the solenoid I replaced....everything looks good, but too tight to get in there with multimeter...

Right now, I have to turn on key, and then manually energize the master WHILE stepping on the pedal...if I energize without stepping on accelerator nothing happens but click.

When I step on pedal, everything seems to move properly, I suppose a switch could have burnt out or come undone.

Re: 80's club car just clicks

Youtube video caught back up (couple replies up from here), shows how I tested for bad solenoid. Turns out I had a bad 'noid, but also something else was wrong.

Re: 80's club car just clicks

Sounds like you are bumping around in the dark.
The solenoid is an on/off switch.
The small terminals activate contact between the large terminals.
It takes a 36v positive to 2 small terminal and a 36v negative to the other small terminal to activate the contact between the 2 large terminals.
The micro-switches are on/off switches for half of this activation circuit ( I think it is the negative side) It doesn't matter which, the other side will be a constant. that is the wire that loops from solenoid to solenoid (yellow?). See if it is positive or negative... then take a jumper wire or the other polarity and test activate the solenoids in question. TEST ONLY WITH THE CART ON JACKS, REAR WHEELS OFF THE GROUND.

If you have micro problems ( solenoid not activating.) Check the F&R micro first.... then, Disconnect the gas peddle linkage from the box and remove it from from the cart. Slide the micros out and check each one for continuity and a good clear "Click"
