Coolster challenger 250cc dune buggy..... any info ?

Hi
I got one of these 250cc dune buggies and I can't seem to find any repair manuals for it . It's not the basic Chinese GY6 Honda clone motor ..... its water cooled and my issue is the starter motor just spins when it didn't have that problem before

Does the starter clutch need the be lined up to engage the starter motor ?

Yes they are ..... turns out it's a CF250cc motor and I took the starter motor off cause I was drawing to much power ..... pulled it apart and cleaned it up but. When I put it back in the motor all it does is spin when I hit the ignition switch .....

Would that be the drive gear ?

I'm gonna pull the magneto off and see if that drive gear if cracked or broken and hopefully I dont have to replace it

I'll take some pics at that time and post them for assistance

Just a guess, but if it engaged the engine before you removed the starter, took it apart to clean it, and now it does not engage I would have to suspect that something was not reassembled correctly on the starter.

If you put the end cap 180 degrees out on an electric starter motor, it WILL spin the opposite direction when you power it up. Perhaps that's what is happening here, and since the starter engages to a one-way sprag bearing, it may just be spinning the wrong direction on the "Freewheel" direction of the bearing in the starter gear set.
