Starting problem
I have a Yamaha G14a, when I press down on the gas pedal to start it nothing happens. I can't find where this pedal is linked to the starter. I have checked the battery and cables and everything there is ok. Also all the cables connected to the gas pedal seem to also be ok. So my question is, how is the pedal linked to the starter and what could be my problem?
Thanks!! Frank |

Re: Starting problem
That's not much help. I was hoping this format would give me an answer, not reference to a drawing.

Re: Starting problem
Have you tried hitting the starter with a hammer while pressing the pedal. Sounds funny, I know but it is a trick an old mexican guy i work with taught me. I deal with gas rentals and when I have to go pick up a rental that has died I first check the battery and then I try beating on the starter. This has worked on numerous occasions. Dont be scared to hit with some force, little baby taps will not do the trick.

Re: Starting problem
Have you tried jumping the selinoid to check your starter? Take a wire and jump the to big posts that the battery hooks too.
If it clicks and the starter does not turn over, that means either there is a bad connection to the starter or your starter is shot. Then try jumping it while hitting it with a hammer as g3 said. Sometimes when the brushes are worn they tend to stick. This causes to starter to lock up. If it does not click when the selinoid is jumped, then that means you have a bad selinoid. Hope this helps!! |

Re: Starting problem
I did not tell him it would fix his problem. Just today I went to look at someones cart who said that it would not start and I could hear the solenoid clicking on. Hit the starter with hammer and what do you know. It started like a champ. So I replaced his starter. It is only an easy way to troubleshoot a bad starter. By the time you get done using your volt meter I will be half way done taking off the starter.
