Diode energized both sides, but no continuity
 
I was testing my diode, and after removing the resistor and diode, I still get 50 volts between the battery negative and each side of the solenoid. I was expecting the side of the solenoid going to the controller to be 0 volts.

Solenoid still clicks when the gas pedal is depressed. There is no continuity between the 2 large solenoid posts.

If the throttle was depressed it would have been 0 v.

If there is no continuity once it clicks the solenoid is bad

I was following the directions here: http://www.cartsunlimited.net/solenoids.html

It says both sides should have power when the pedal is depressed, but not when it is released.

Yes with the resistor removed. Both large terminals will have power when pedal depressed (if the solenoid activates = closes)
And when the pedal is released (up) there will be 36 or 48 volts on the battery cable only.

Test a diode:
set the meter to continuity
apply the test leads to each end
You should see continuity one way and not the other.
Swap test leads end for end to one way or the other.

Ok, that's what I thought. I'm getting 48 volts on both posts without touching the pedal. I don't see how it's possible unless the solenoid was shorted out internally, but there is no continuity between the 2 posts, so that hasn't happened.

Diode and resistor are removed for testing.

Seriously? you have a welded solenoid or you have the solenoid activated constantly

Here's a pic of the solenoid as I'm testing it (with resistor and diode removed). Right hand side is 49.7 volts, same as battery pack. Left hand side is 48.0 without touching the pedal, goes up to 49+ once pedal is pressed and solenoid clicks. Yellow wire goes to controller B+.

I haven't figured out how everything works yet, but the only wire going to the negative side of the solenoid is from the controller, so could a faulty MCOR be prompting the controller to make 48 volts on the negative side of the solenoid?

The resistor is going to read on both studs unless theres a load on it then your meter will read the dropped voltage with out a load on it its going to read the same on both ends being hooked up.If the solenoid is welded try removing one of the single wires bet it wont drive your reading the capacity from the the controller thats why the resistor is in there to charge the controller you would have to remove the yellow cable to check the solenoid
