48-Volt Battery Maintainer
 

Being my regular battery charger works fine, I was thinking of a battery Charger and Maintainer, is this worth having or should I just ditch this idea and get the DPI charger? Also any particular one? My cart sits out at the camp, weeks at a time. I leave the charger on but was wondering if a smart charge would be worth it.

I have been using a battery maintainer since last November. I am pleased with it. Sometimes my cart sits for 2 or 3 weeks at a time. Here is the link to a previous discussion.

I use the Save-A-Battery unit as well. It works very well. If I am not driving the cart, the little charger/maintainer is plugged in. Some members have poo-pooed the idea that the Save-A-Battery can actually desulfate a battery. All I can say is my batteries are in much better shape now after using the unit for 4 months. I just got back from 3 weeks at the campground and never used my large charger once. I am sold.

I don't have an issues with the big charger but I can be weeks without using the cart. I know the charger is suppose to come on every two weeks and that would be fine If it actually does come on. The thing is the smart charging will always check and keep the batteries at maximum charge, seems like that would extend the life to some degree. I know to actually test this would be very difficult and people cam form many opinions on that, I feel unless there is some serious side affect i think a smart maintainer/charger would be optimal. I like the idea of also buying the optional quick adapter plug and just putting it next to the regular charger. Also when I'm there and using the cart I would use the big charger, check levels and then before leaving swap it out with the maintainer.

Olman, I have had the same experience. My resting voltage is higher now than it was before I started using the maintainer last November. My batteries are getting long in the tooth and I expect to replace them in the spring and use them in a project cart. As you said there are many opinions out there on maintainers, but my experience has been positive.

I think at the low amperage it shouldn't hurt the batteries at all but that is just an opinion lol.

I also have a Save-A-battery. Works great, leave it plugged in for weeks at a time. Keeps my pack at a constant 53+ volts. No problem with power failures.Puts out 2 amps @48 volts.Shop around ,prices vary.

When I first bought the charger, it maintained the pack at 53.2 volts. After using it constantly for 4 months, my on charge voltage is steady at 54.4 volts. Big improvement. Another advantage I have seen is that because it is a low amp charger, I have not had to add water at all.

I ordered two just now, one for my cart and the other for my boat, figured they both sit up when I'm not there and If it extends the life out of them then it will be worth the cost. We'll see how it goes.
