Mixing new batts with old?
 

This is a quote from another thread:

"But, your not supposed to mix old batteries with new ones... BAD BAD BAD things happen!!!"

My questions are, is this true and just what are the bad bad bad things?

100% true. As a battery ages its internal resistance increases. So when that happens, and you demand load like driving your cart the voltage accros the terminals drops significantly preventing you from developing full power.

But the main problem comes in the charge cycle. Since the older batteries internal resistance is higher and thus raise their voltage higher fooling the charger into thinking the batteries are fully charged when they are not, at least not the new ones. So the new batteries never recieve a full charge and will significantly reduce their life span from being undercharged all the time, not to mention all the loss in power.

You can cause old bateries to boil dry.

The charger (automatic) will either turn off too soon or stay on too long.

Insulation can melt off of the cables.

You can burn up the charger.

All of the above "can" happen and do under the right conditions hence it is easier to use "Like" batteries.

From what I understand an old battery and a new battery have very different charging needs.... Batteries get less efficient as they get older...so older batteries would call for a longer charge which will 'cook' the new ones hurting them with heat issues :thumbup:
