23hp Vanguard won't start
HELP, i am installing a 23 hp briggs into a project and I've run into a problem.
I am using the briggs keyswitch and extended the wiring to place the switch properly. The engine won't crank over with the switch. I can jump the terminals on the solenoid to get it to crank. With the key off the orange wire from the hot side of the solenoid to the switch gets so hot it melts the heatshrink on the wiring. I have checked my wiring several times and I can't figure out what is going on. Anyone seen anything like this??? I did put the battery charger on it when first trying to start it, so I think I fried something. |
Re: 23hp Vanguard won't start
Sounds like you have hot wired to ground. You probably mixed up the wires. When the key is off the ignition wire is grounded.
Ditch the briggs switch and use a marine style See turbo's post http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/big-b...g-diagram.html Briggs is similar |

I live in an area with a lot of marine repair shops, so I might be able to find that switch locally. |
Re: 23hp Vanguard won't start
There are stickies at the top of the BB section with Briggs keyswitch diagrams... If the surface you mounted the switch to isn't grounded you need to take the #6 position and ground it somewhere.....

1 Attachment(s)
This is the diagram I have been referencing. It shows #6 pos as being the alternator output and #1 being the ground.

Re: 23hp Vanguard won't start
If that's the right switch then ground #1.

Re: 23hp Vanguard won't start
I got it working. Not exactly sure what was wrong but I tore it out and started from scratch on the wiring.
Thanks for the help!!! |
Re: 23hp Vanguard won't start
That's good news! Let us know if you figure out what it was......

Pretty sure that I had some crossed wires.
