Back to paint....

Do you have any experience shooting anything from the Vibrance Collection that is offered by PPG? I'd like to try something different, either super bright white or pearl or a heavy flake metallic or.... The base color will be white, so I'm not sure if there even is something called metallic white. I just need it to really 'pop', and will use a white sealer this time for sure.

If there is another PPG product that you'd suggest, I'm open to that as well - especially if its in the Deltron or ShopLine categories. I'd like to stay away from Omni and Global.

Re: Primer / Sealer

Also, any experience with the 'Hell Fire' DBC topcoats, or 'O-So-Sexy' DBC paints from PPG?

Re: Primer / Sealer

Ya know I used to use PPG products a long time ago and switched over to Dupont for some reason. I personally think most of the base clear systems out there will shoot the same but some have better charecteristics than others such as , hiding, color match, and a couple other small things. In the end they really shouldn't shoot much different in my opinion. As for me I pretty much stick to Dupont unless someone wants something crazy then I will usually go to House Of Kolor paint for some 3 stage paints. Not sure if that helped but that's my thought.

aacorp 08-14-2013 12:06 PM

Re: Primer / Sealer

Yes, that is helpful - as I was curious how the pearls and/or tri-coat systems laid compared to the typical 2 stage system.

I will read the Tech Sheet(s), that is when I usually start to gain or lose confidence in trying something new in the PPG world!

Thanks,

master66 08-14-2013 01:10 PM

Re: Primer / Sealer

I will say if you are doing tri- coats make sure your gun is in perfect working order. When you go over a base with candy it really stands out if your gun was striping or blotching.

Re: Primer / Sealer

So, I might be painting a fiberglass body, and have heard about static electricity building up and the need to ground the body during the paint process? Does this sound familiar?

Is there anything unique to painting a fiberglass body, ie:

1. Should I spray it with adhesion promoter?
2. Should I use a flex add? (it is a very thin fiberglass, and flexes - a lot)
3. It has primer on it, should I sand all of that off first?

Finally, what is a 'tinted clear'?

PS: Gotta add a Drag Racing pic. John was leaving 'the office' at MGR, but stopped to sign my son's autograph book and asked him how his racing season was going!

Awesome, thanks. Will have more questions as I get into this further.

Will try to post this drag racing pic, Bode had Halfscale Dragster (Jr Dragster chassis & clutch company) sponsorship on his car this weekend - till it burned / blew off!

For Master; was in England for business last week, went to Santa Pod Raceway about 2 hours North of London to watch them race. Actually found 2 Nostalgic FC's! The Time Warp car is originally from the New Jersey area.

That's awesome! I love the old school funny cars when they named them, unlike now it is all corporate sponsorship. The paint jobs were usually impressive also.

Re: Primer / Sealer

Absolutely, love the old cars with creative names. These guys in England were very serious about their drag racing, and had top notch stuff on their cars - no junk. I had to leave by 2pm to catch my flight out of Heathrow, and missed this horrendous crash:

http://www.autoevolution.com/news/gr...deo-67478.html

I was really surprised to see but a handful of golf carts over there, not even electric ones since gas is so expensive (and mostly diesel). Geez, a drag race event here in the states is like a mini golf cart show - everyone is tricking out their cart, whether for function or show! Heck, our golf carts are 'preferred seating' at the track chapel services - they line the perimeter of this service, you can just see the roofs of the carts (and our windshield frame).

Just read the whole thread.....outstanding work on the paint and Koodo's to you and your son:thumbup: Master66, if you need a one off car for next years event, "Wilson" would be happy to have you drive him, or maybe Yamahahauler (if it's ever finished) ?. Could probably get it trailered up since we do some rentals for the event (if they'd ever pay for this year:shock:) Just had a great time reading this8)

Thanks for joining our painting/drag racing thread smallblock we kind of took off with it. My wife and I love the national event every year, we camp down there all weekend across the street from the main entrance at Howard Espings place. It works awesome because we just buy tickets get a golf cart pass from my buddy Frank Nelson and drive the cart right from our camp spot. Hopefully we could meet up some day there and watch some racing. I will try to add some pictures of my cart so you know who to look for if you see me. You guys have a good winter.

Re: Primer / Sealer

For our first year of Jr Drag Racing we pulled the Jr Dragster with Benjamin's 2 person go kart, worked ok - but I got tired of the pull starts and burning up the drive belt on the go kart. Also, sitting way too low - ate a lot of dust and stones when following the golf carts up to the staging lanes (got a lot of stares and half smiles too!).

http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...QADragoWay.jpg

So, we upgraded to a Yamaha cart, a seriously positive move!! We love it, and spend a fair amount of time just cruising around the pits in it. It can become a status thing very quickly, as there is always something you'd like to buy/install (like a back seat that can incorporate my tool box....)

http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...edbackleft.jpg

And figuring out if this Jr Dragster tach would work on the Yamaha...

http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...ps7a42a337.jpg

I've been thinking of adding some type of metallic ghost flames to the cart....

I want to see Master's cart first to see his paint job.

That color is House of Kolor Cobalt blue candy over a silver base then clear. Basically it is a 3 stage paint.

Re: Primer / Sealer

Hey!

Well, with baseball, tournament baseball, swim team, softball, etc. you get the jist... We've only been out with the Jr Dragster 2x this year. But, we decided to hit the Jr Dragster Eastern Conference Finals at Bristol Dragway anyway, just for the fun of the event. A week from departure, Mom and the 2 younger siblings decided to come along, so that necessitated installing a back seat on the cart - what's another late night in the garage! Decided to add arm rests with cup holders as well. It was an overall hit - except I lost my tool box location.... oh well!

The week of racing went as typical, plenty of rain delays and cancellations, challenging weather changes and track conditions, but as the week went on we began to get it figured out. After going out in the early rounds of the buildup races, we shocked ourselves by going all the way to the final round of The Big Race! Amazing, over the course of 2 days, 750 kids simmers down to just 16 Finalists across the 8 age groups. To find ourselves there was a big enough surprise, to look into the other lane and see our friends from our home track was an even bigger surprise - these 2 boys have been racing each other since they were 8 years old. We came up a little short in the Final, but it was a good clean race, and the 2 boys were relaxing after the race, parade lap, interviews, trophy presentations, etc and just talking it over - just what racing is all about. So, a very proud Dad!

Have fun at your race, there's nothing like The Western Swing!!

Re: Primer / Sealer

So, it's been a little over a year and I thought it was time for a Jr Dragster update!

My older son turned 13, so he moved up to the fastest class - 7.90 seconds in the 1/8 mile, equates to about 85 mph! We traded in the 8.90 engine for a new 7.90 engine, and set the clutch up for the different power curve. We also had the shock / flex function of the chassis repaired so we could use the chassis to absorb some launch and prevent tire spin. This meant we had to move the ballast weight around, necessitating a custom weight tank that mounts underneath - which had to be painted, in February!

It was a busy Winter getting this Jr Dragster prepared:

Just replacing 6" of moly tubing created a ton of work!

http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...psyn1ueiel.jpg

http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...psdpauwjcd.jpg

I Used one of the glass bottles with propellant to shoot the PPG products, worked pretty well - I was surprised.

http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...psxf4co4m8.jpg

http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...psob53izxg.jpg

http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...psghfmzuf7.jpg

Painted the custom weight tank as well, tough to keep dirt out of the paint but once its installed - nobody will even notice!

http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...pshy75iyzt.jpg

In between baseball, and everything else, we finally get out to big race in May. Benjamin's #1 fan (little bro Danny) is watching from the golf cart as Ben puts it in the Winners Circle! What a shock, but .001 lights go a long way. :)

http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...psmavsgsqr.jpg

http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...psguwvxxpq.jpg

We were on a roll - Benjamin won something at several tracks this year:

http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...psdrjmpioh.jpg

http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...psir1lfcht.jpg

It was a good year!

However, the paint on the golf cart is showing the use/abuse! So, I'll load up some pics in the next day or so to inquire about repairing some issues. :(

Wow that does look like you guys had a good year. It is amazing how working on 6" of tubing can create so much work. Then when you get in to it you think "well since I am here I might as well do this or that". This is the time of year I get kind of bummed because racing is almost over. My wife and I are going to the Phoenix national event in February so at least we have something to look forward to. Just let me know about painting questions and have a good one.

Thanks Master! I have some immediate paint questions, but not about the golf cart - yet.

So this kid got the bug last year, so I got him into a Jr Dragster at the end of the Summer for his licensing passes. He did great, and is definitely hooked!

http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...ps1azhrlm3.jpg

http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...psohu4mmws.jpg

All was well until several weeks later when Danny's Jr came loose in the trailer on the way home from Englishtown, and busted the nose all up. So, I reinforced the underside of the body, and then epoxied the topside, finishing it off with some filler. This is a very thin Fiberglas body, with what appears to be rattle can gray primer on it.

I'd like to paint this body a very bright white with PPG's Shop Line products.

- Do I need to remove all of the gray primer? It's been on there for at least 8 years.
- Do I need to mix the PPG differently due to painting Fiberglas?
- Should I spray thin coats because of the flex in the body?
- I'm assuming I should spray a DP white seal coat?
- Can I just spray the sealer over the sanded down body, or do I need to put high build on it?

Personally I would sand off as much primer as you can without breaking through the original sealer that is covering the fiberglass. The reason I say that is because if it is a acrylic enamel primer the urethane based paints could possibly eat into it. You don't have to remove every speck of it but as much as you can.

You can mix and spray your paint the same as normal. If you would like you could add a flex additive in the paint to give it more flex.

spray the repaired spots with high build and sand. You can then go and spray your sealer over all of it. When doing so fog the area of repair a couple time first and let that dry a bit. If you pound on to much sealer in those areas it will create a ring around the repaired areas.

Painting fiberglass is really no different than painting metal. It is the repair and prep that is a little different.

Good luck and let me know if you have anything else.

BTW, both boys are quite the tech - they put their timeslips (their car and their competitor's cars) into an app called dragslip analyzer and it plays back the run for them so they can visually see the difference in reaction times, stripe strategy etc.

Re: Primer / Sealer

Master, I'm rethinking my plan - I'm concerned that the repair will show through because the final color will be a bright white which will be reflective, especially with a clear coat.

So, I'm thinking of going back to my typical sequence - tell me if this is overkill:

- sand off all of the rattle can primer
- shoot a coat of DP90LF (not as a sealer), hoping this black base will really cover the repair area
- shoot a coat of K36 high build
- shoot a coat of DP50LF as a sealer
- base
- clear

Too much paint?

master66 10-28-2015 12:10 PM

Re: Primer / Sealer

I personally would skip the first step of the DP 90. The high build primer will definetly cover the repair area. Just go light on the first coat around the repaired areas. Usually I just dust a couple coats around the repair area and let it dry. Then come back and put on your normal coats everywhere. Other than that it sounds good.

aacorp 10-28-2015 06:21 PM

Re: Primer / Sealer

Ok thanks, will def skip the DP90 step.

Re: Primer / Sealer

So, next issue.

I must have driven over some really harsh roads on that racing trip to Englishtown because, not only did Danny's Jr come loose but the umbrella's I store in the rain channels of the golf cart roof came down as well. One of the umbrella's came down point first onto the hood of the golf cart, causing this:

http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...pshc1alelq.jpg

The chip is all the way to the K36, so I'm assuming that some USC Icing is the only way to repair that?

The scratch is deep enough to catch my fingernail, but I was hoping to just we sand it and hand buff it?

Or, is it best to simply fill the chip, and respray base & clear? I've never blown in a spot repair before so I'm not sure how complicated it is to blend...

Any advice?

master66 11-05-2015 09:09 AM

Re: Primer / Sealer

I would start with if possible take the panel and lay it flat. Take some high build primer and fill the chip with a small brush. Just kind of make a puddle you can wet sand flat afterward. If you sealed the panel after primer and before paint try to mix in some of the sealer to get the same shade as what you sealed it with. The closer you get the primer color to what is under the base the better. You can then wet sand the primer with 600 flat to the clear. Keep the repaired area as small as possible when sanding.

You then want to wet sand the long scratches for buffing "but don't buff it". Go back and spray the chip area " with reduced air to minimize overspray" starting in the center to cover it and then blend outward about 2 or 3 inches. Spray on the clear doing the same blending out making sure you go an inch or two past the base color One coat regular mix of clear but the second coat thin it out with reducer by about 50%. Now be careful when spraying this because it will be much thinner.

When you wet sand the area for buffing just do it normal but make sure you don't sand the edges of the clear back to the color area. Buff the entire area and you will see a slight ring around it but it won't be that bad.

Or you can do the primer trick with a brush sand it flat blend out a bigger area with color and then re clear the whole panel.

aacorp 11-05-2015 10:48 AM

Re: Primer / Sealer

Thanks master66, I'll have to think over the options - but I'm liking the second one a bit more regarding clear coating the entire panel. Given my skill set with auto painting, that option might be better suited for me - especially if I'm going to remove the hood anyway.

Just need time and weather to cooperate....

aacorp 11-10-2015 01:41 PM

Re: Primer / Sealer

Master, is it safe to use lacquer thinner on the Jr Dragster body to remove the last remnants of rattle can primer? Could it negatively affect the gel coat and cause issues when I lay down the K36?
