Burning (welding) Solenoids...

I have a (5) solenoid/Resistor micro-switch style Club Car, and I've been having problems with it "welding" solenoids in the closed position. Is there a better alternative for solenoids, rather than the off-the-shelf 36V?

The ones I've got were labeled as 36V and were from 2 different sources (one of which was Amazon)

The cart does have a lift, with bigger tires and a high speed motor. I bought the cart with the current setup, so I don't know if this has been a long time issue prior to me owning it. However, my guess is that the larger tires and high speed motor are putting a heavier strain on the solenoids, hence welding them closed.

Thanks!

those old carts cant really handle bigger tire and lifts very well , is it the master solenoid that keeps welding ? make sure all cables are tight and corrosion free... and get a solenoid from one of the site sponsors here , amazon ones can be junk...

Yes convert it to solid state drive.

If you want to use the cart for much more than short trips across the park then you will want to convert to solid state speed control.
You can read about how resistor coil speed control works. How solid state speed control works. And why you want one or the other here > https://www.cartsunlimited.net/why-c...-drive---.html

Another vote for Scotty’s kits. Cartsunlimited.net

Yes, the primary drive (first solenoid) and one of the higher speed ones.

Also keep in mind these cars are meant to run wide-open most of the time. The lower speeds just expel the difference as resistor heat and are not intended for full-time use. Mostly to just get going or intermittent use. The heat from the resistors ends up melting them.

There was a later model version that still uses resistors but only had one solenoid up front with the resistor module behind the batteries. This one is more robust. Probably less modification needed as well.

In my opinion the old 5 solenoid is far superior than the Vglide for high current switching.

A few things to keep in mind, specially with the bigger tires and faster Motor:
1) Solenoid Contacts are damaged by opening or closing while a lot of current is passing thru the contacts.

2) The Master Solenoid never opens or closes while current is passing.

3) The Motor will consume the highest current while accelerating from 0 mph.
So when a Solenoid fails welded you need to replace it right away or the Master Solenoid may get damage as well.

You also want to accelerate slowly and don't get to WOT right away or your high speed Solenoid will take a bigger inrush current when it closes.

I think Club Car actually made some thicker resistor coils for their high torque Motors, but a Controller provides a much smoother and efficient ride.

I’ve always felt this way as well. The V glide wiper switch was kind of a dangerous mess.

It's only superior until you have the unfortunate task of having to disassemble the pedal micro-switch cluster and later realize you can't put it back together again.
