new to hunting, first deer down!

as title says , im new to hunting, im 29 years old and been active outdoors almost all my life, grew up tournament bass fishing with my father at the age of 14 and became rather successfull with such, but decided to take on hunting last year, as no one in my family does it and dont have many friends that either, i was kinda on my own. i started hunting after gun season started so i knew i was a disadvantage, also same goes with hunting on public land, so lastyear i sat for about 6-7 days and didnt even see a single deer anywhere i was at. i did manage to find some rubs and scat and signs of deer but never movement while i was in a tree.

this year i was more proactive and got access to private land and the old gentlemen that let me use his land said hes got plent of deer and boy was he right!
ive hunted 6-7 times already this year and only during 1 sit did i not see a deer. ive passed on a smaller buck couple weeks ago and had a large doe sneak up behind me before i could see her to get a shot she was already covered up by alot of brush. so she ended up walking away.

but thursday at 940am i had a 6 point 2.5 year old come charging under my tree stand after a doe estres bleat call, and i mean he was 10 yards max from my stand, and then walked out right to the clearing in the path and was heading down to where he thought that call had come from. and thats when i got my shot.

hes not a huge deer by anymeans but for where im at, and being my FIRST deer ever, im stoaked it was a solid deer. field dressed at 140 lbs.
im waiting to get him back from the processor so i can work on mounting the antlers.

Hey!! Nice buck!! It may not be a record, but I've been hunting for over 45 years and I've never had a record either. But you scored a very nice buck. So...Kudo's to you.

Now, for the mount you have a lot of options. Of course, you can do a full neck\head. Or you can just do a rack on wood. Now, and this is just me...but I've never been a big fan of full head\neck mounts unless the deer have been monster bucks. That explained why I don't have any full head\neck mounts!! :lhmo: But I do have one Wyoming Antelope and one 8-point Pa. whitetail "Western" mount. Here's a pic of the Antelope western mount...and it's holding a flint pistol that I built:

A Western mount is easy to do yourself (just go to youtube) or your local taxidermist can do it for you. I had mine done for $100. I don't have a lot of $$$$ invested in 'em, they don't take up a lot of room in the game room, but they are conversation pieces and reminders of good times.

Just an option for you to consider.

And again, congrats on a nice buck!!

Dave

i think im just going to do the cheap mount where its just the antlers on the plack with the felt base. nothing fancy but it will get the job done, and ill make sure i put the arrow and broadhead across the rack as well.

That will work. My only piece of advice on the broad head would be to dull up the razor's real good. Just take a stone and go 90-degrees flat so that someone holding a kid up by it....in case the youngster would happen to grab the broad head, the kid would not accidentally cut his hand. Make the razor's as dull as a butter knife. You know kids.....Murphy's law...if it could happen....it probably will happen!!!:shock::shock:

Congrats on a very nice deer. Getting a deer into bow range is not an easy task. Then to put together a good shot without being seen and blood trail to the animal. Good job.

That's a great buck. Nothing like the first one. Enjoy the good eats you got there.
