Fall Rio Grande Turkey

I was out deer hunting yesterday in West Texas, sitting in the middle of about a 20 acre field in a box blind. We didn't see any deer, but a tom turkey came out of the woods about 200 yards away and proceeded to walk right by the blind on his way to the other side of the field. He fed there for a half hour or so while I waited for a deer to show (I really needed a deer for the freezer). When he turned around and walked right back toward us I finally couldn't stand it and shot him. I wish I'd had my bow with me, he was within 15' at one point. He turned out to be a very nice turkey, 21lbs, 1" and 1 1/8" spurs and 3 beards of 5", 7.5" and 10". Here are some pictures:

Nice big tom. Maybe the buck will show up next time. You must have a great blind to get that guy so close to you. Turkeys are usually pretty keen

Thanks, but no - the blind is a regular old wood box blind with shooting windows that swing out and up. It's been in that field for years. There was very little skill on my part to acquiring this bird, rather I was just in the right place at the right time. George

Now that's what I'm talkin about! That's one fine bird. Ya gonna mount him? I've killed a double but never a triple bearded bird. Good spurs too! The only thing that would make them pictures look better was if you were posing off your cart. Congrat's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In Texas, each county has its own rules. My deer lease has no fall season, but the hog spot I hunt (which is where I was) has a fall either sex turkey season.

No, I won't mount him, though I will put his tail, beards and spurs on a plaque next to the Eastern turkey I shot in Nebraska with the bow. I messed up when I lived there and didn't make sure I had a Merriams turkey fan on the wall too. We did bring this one back to camp in the bag well of the EZ-Go. He looked pretty bedraggled then as it was raining. Even funnier, I shot a very small spike buck yesterday morning and sat him in the bag well with a bag strap around his neck. I should have taken a picture of that for you. I was getting some grief for shooting a dog sized deer, 82 lbs live weight, and didn't think about the camera until later.

Hey, a 82 pound deer taste just like a 182 pound deer, Just a little more tender. You got meat in the freezer. Do they? I hope everything goes right this year so we can go get our Rio's.
