Charger not turning off?

I have a totle charge III charger. it will turn on when you plug it in, but it's not turning off. The batteries are a year old. I've got the cover off and every thing looks ok. I put a meter on the dc cord, and it checks 44.8v, but it's not turning off.

You can't check your battery voltage with the charger on. You need to wait about an hour after the charger shuts off to get a good reading.

On the charger...you have one of 2 things going on. You either have a bad connection somewhere or your PC board inside the charger is bad. More than likely a connection. A simple test for the board....unplug the charger from AC and DC, now plug the charger into the cart and listen for a "click". That will be the relay inside the charger. If you hear that your charger is more than likely OK and you have a bad cable connection somewhere. Feel around on the cables and I bet there are a few that are warm.....

The worst case is the batteries are toast.

More questions:

How many hours did charger run?
What does/did ammeter read?

The 44.8 is a bit low on the finish side of a charge cycle IMO. Mine gets to ~45.5v and ammeter is at ~2A at finish.

A highly discharged 36v pack can take 12-14 hours to complete a cycle.

FWIW & HIH

I Charged them about 10 hours. The amp meter was at 5, when I unpluged it. I will charge it again tomarrow, and see if my cable is heating up.

You wouldn't think that 1 yr old batteries are suspect but it might be a good idea to check the SG of each cell.

Yes, pgproves, It has been known to happen. For all you that are not rocket scientists; SG means specific gravity. A simple $7 hydrometer from the auto parts store measures the specific gravity of each cell to determine the amount of activity or health of the cell. It is a very good way to judge the state of a battery..
