2001 Club Cart DS, cheapest way to increase speed
 

My cart is a tad 'slow', I've clocked it at around 12 MPH.
After reading around the net and in this board, I don't want to upgrade the controller or the motor. I was thinking just the tires.

I have stock 18x8.5-8 tires, so I was thinking of maybe going to 20x8.5-8.
Or, if they don't make those, 20x10-8.
How much speed would that get me?
Even just a couple of MPH would be fine.

Also, I was thinking of only doing it to the rear tires so that I don't have the issue where turning would scrape the sides on the front.

Any comments?

If it is an IQ cart the speed magnet is the way to go for what you are wanting.

Keep in mind, putting taller tires on will help gain speed, but you will lose torque.

If I recall, his cart is a series model (lever for fwd/rev). No magnet. Speed gains are hard to come by on a series cart, without controller or motor change. Heavier battery cables will help hold speed with bigger tires - but the gain will be pretty minimal regardless.

With a series cart voltage and tire size (which still has it's limitations) will be your best way to increase without going the motor/controller route.

Welp, the tires are getting a little worn, so was going to replace them anyways.
The 2 inch difference in size between the front and the back shouldn't make any difference, right?

Because I'm thinking of only putting the 20 inch tires on the back.

Maybe the fact that I'll always be going 'downhill' will gain me some more speed :lhmo:

Other than a "rakish" look to the cart - the different size on the back shouldn't matter. If you have a rear seat - then the larger tires could bottom out (AKA scrape) frequently. Also, tire pressure matters - a cart running 10-12 lbs pressure is definitely slower than one running 25 psi.

A 20" tire on a DS will rub if your springs are worn at all. Dave @ Revolution Golf Cars (Site sponsor) got me a set of XRT shackles that are 1.5" longer to cover the 20" rear tires on my daughters DS. I added a 1" block above the spring in the front and it rides good, no rubbing. BUT, if you plan on adding a rear seat, you'll need to add dual action rear springs or HD rear springs. Dual action will have the better ride... Good luck.

I use my cart for golfing. So I don't plan on having a seat in the back.
I was thinking of filing down the top of the underside where the rear wheels might touch.
