87 CC Questions

A buddy of mine bought a home in the community where I live and did not want the 1987 CC that came with the house so he gave it to me. This was in 2008 so i have had it since then. I am getting ready to put in a new set of Trojan 125's in place of the Duracells that have 5 years and 7 months on them. At the same time I will replace all the solenoids as well since the existing ones are 3-4 years old.

Question 1: I have replaced all the battery cables 5 years ago with 4 gauge. wire. Is there any advantage to moving up to 2 gauge on the batteries

Question 2: Anybody have an comments on also replacing the 3 resistor coils on the solenoids. They are rusty but they are working.

Thanks for your help!

There’s no point in 2 AWG cables on a resistor cart. I would say 4 gauge is good unless your converting it to solid state.

As far as the resistors, surface rust is pretty common. Unless they are rusted through then I personally would probably leave them alone if they work fine.

Leave those resistors alone. They are forever parts unless they melt from a short. There is a very good chance that whatever you replace them with won't be nearly as hearty as what you have now.

Thank you LukeL & Lochlin for the advice. I'm just trying to give the 32 YO cart some TLC within my abilities besides air, water and grease.
