85 Marathon coil spring rate?

So I'm looking to replace the rear coils on my cart. I've found quite a few options but I want to know what the stock spring rate is. Does anyone know? The replacement coils have rates from 225 lbs to 300 lbs. Thanks for the help.

When I replaced my springs, I was never able to find the stock spring rate. I have a rear seat on my 81 marathon, and went with 450 lb springs that was 10in tall with a 2.5 in inside diameter. I also used spring isolators on the top and bottom to give it a little more height. They work well.

So was that a combined rate of 450, so 225 each side?

No that was 450 lbs each. I bought them online at Speedway Motors. The part number was 58210450. I tried to post the link, but it will not let me since I'm a new member. You should be able to find them by doing a search of speedway motors and the part number.

I've found quite a few coils to use but like I said the actual rate varies so it's really up to me to choose. I don't have a rear seat so that's why I was curious about the stock coils. I may just go light and see what happens. To me the load is split across the front and back. So even with two heavy individuals I shouldn't need a heavier rated coil because the front shares the load. This is just me trying to common sense my way through this so I could be totally off base.

orangecart75 your cart weights around 800 lbs. plus your weight? plus who ever rides with you. You have to take that weight in to consideration

OK, I'm bumping this again. Why? Because I'm not satisfied with the answer. I understand the cart itself weighs in around 700-800 lbs but not all of that weight is sprung weight. You have to take into account the unsprung weight of the vehicle and subtract that out. Now what that is...I don't know. Looking at a simple picture of an empty cart you'll see the engine, clutches, axles, wheels, etc. are unsprung weight. The big ticket items I'm seeing are the gas tank, battery and frame/body. Plus whomever rides.

With that said I think you're better off thinking the cart is 300 lbs sprung. This of course is nothing more than a SWAG. Add in your peeps and total up the weight. The front again has leaves but the rear coils will be doing most of the work. I'm thinking you'd be better off with a 250 rate.

edit: also, it's worth mentioning that when looking at spring rates the one that is stated (250 lbs for example) means that it takes 250 lbs to compress the spring 1". If the spring compresses 2" then that means you have provided 500 lbs of force. I think we're going overkill on these rates IMO.

edit2: last thing I wanted to mention. These coils are the same as a standard coilover spring. 2.5" ID. The Marathon's need a 14" coil in order to do the 4" lift. These coils can be found lots of places especially on offroad websites. Google search "coilover spring exchange" and I think you'll find some places. Maybe even a place owned by a guy named Dave... *wink* *wink* *nudge* *nudge* that has clearance coils from time to time. I found a set for stupid cheap.

Alright boys, last post. I got my coils today and here they are...

2.5"ID x 14" x 200lbs

You can see the height is 14" (4" over stock) but what you'll notice is that the coil is close to twice as thick! This supports my conclusion that a heavier rated coil isn't needed IMO.
