Starter generator bad out of the box!

I have a 91 2 stroke marathon I just replaced the starter generator because the original hitachi would only crank in reverse. The new eBay starter I bought is not charging and it is also draining a fully charged battery after a minute of driving like the starter is not dropping out once it’s running. What are the chances that it’s bad out of the box I am under the impression that if it will turn the motor over it should charge. I grounded the df terminal to check if it was charging and i only get 10 volts at the battery when it’s running.

The starter doesn't drop out once it's running. It switches to a power producer from a power consumer once it reaches a certain speed.

Which end of the df wire did you ground? It needs to be disconnected at the voltage regulator.

I disconnected the wire from df to the regulator at the regulator, and used it to ground the the df terminal

That configuration should be producing around 19 volts at speed.

I don't know why it's working as a starter, and not as a generator.

Looking at the diagram, you can see it's nothing more than armature coils, and field coils.

I guess if there was an internal short where the df wire connects to the field coil, it could kill the generator part.

Re: Starter generator bad out of the box!

I did a little searching, and found an interesting thread about tractor generators. Half way down, there is a long post by a guy named Al.

He knows what he is talking about. The only difference I can see is that golf cart starter/generators run in both directions. But, that is what a DC generator is all about.
I'm going to study up a little more on the shunt coil for charging, and the series coil for generating. https://simpletractors.com/forums/to...-generator-or/

One more thing. Check the green wire for continuity. If it's broke inside, the generator won't charge.

Right and you would think that since the + is running through the field coils before it gets to the armature the field coils would be ok. That’s some good info thank you.

So it’s fixed now. the problem was with the new s/g the f1 and f2 terminals were opposite of what the original hitachi s/g was so what was happening was the df coil wasn’t getting power the ezgo wiring diagram is not 100 percent correct as far as internal s/g wiring goes. This is how I believe the coils are actually wired Attachment 183425
