Bearing removal from axle housing
Evening folks,
New to the forum. I did a search and found a lot of answers for removing bearings that are intact. Mine, in fact were burnt very bad. Now I got the inner ring off the axle, but can't get the outer ring from the axle housing. I tried drilling a hole to make it weak enough to crack it and pry it out, but the drill bit would not penetrate the steel. It's not big enough to get a cutting disk in there. I'm trying to do this without heat as not to wreck the seal. Any ideas? |

Re: Bearing removal from axle housing
That was exactly what mine looked like, except for the seal on mine is still good.
Will get the slidehammer tomorrow. Thanks for the replies, I had to step away from it for the night, but will get'er done tomorrow. Great thread you linked to though, funny stuff. |
Re: Bearing removal from axle housing
If you can't grab it with a slide-hammer,either pull the opposite axle and try to drive it out with a long bar,or Carefully slit the race with a torch in to 2 halves and pop it with a lady-slipper(sometimes 1 slit will work).

Re: Bearing removal from axle housing
I was thinking a plazma cutter, but I can't get a new seal for 4 days, so I was trying to do it without heat if I could.
I'll see about the slidehammer and go from there. |
Re: Bearing removal from axle housing
Torch is actually better, since you can control the heat, get it melting, slowly blow into it,then back off.Watch out for Oil-Flash!:thumbup:

Re: Bearing removal from axle housing
Out of acetylene at the moment. But that makes sense.
If the slidehammer doesn't work, will have to resort to the torches I suppose. |
Re: Bearing removal from axle housing
You can try driving it in to the axle tube before pulling it. This will sometimes break the bond and allow the puller to work easier!
