voltage reducer

Hi !

I have just installed a voltage reducer 48 volts to 12 volts ( 10 amps ), and i want to know if it's normal that there's a noise coming out of the reducer, also when i plug it it spark's when i touch the post of the battery. When i put my lights on, it seems to stop the noise. I din't take a chance so i unplugged it.

Can someone help me !

Thank's

Maybe i plugged it wrong, i plugged it on the first (negative) (driver seat) and last battery(positive) (passenger seat).

Re: voltage reducer

First of all are you sure that its a 48 volt reducer to 12 volts at 10 amps? For most of the reducers I have seen a full pack ( 36 or 48 volt ) usually has an out put of around 20-25 amps? The 10 amp reducers usually are only hooked to 2 batterys in pack rather than total battery pack ( 48 Volt ) Also they should be hooked up with a way of turning them off when not in use. I had a friend that lost his cart in a fire because the reducer was on ALL THE TIME and over heated and caught fire . I hook up to the normal switch using a relay so as NOT OVERLOAD the switch and factory wiring. Costs more to start but keeps us OLD PEOPLE from forgetting to turn them off. Go by installation instructions as they should be safe?? The manufacturer should have a LIABILITY for safety.
AS to the sound I wouldnt think that it will cause any problems BUT WHEN MURPHYS LAW KICKS IN???? Having the sound stop when something is using power from reducer sounds OK? Was this unit sold through a reliable company or off the net? I would question the supplier for safety sake.

Re: voltage reducer

These are kinda like the Voltage reducers for your vehicle cell phone charger they are on
all the time.
The drain is not much, but a in-line switch which U can turn off when not in use, will work.

Re: voltage reducer

the voltage reducer is really for 48 to 12 volts (10 amps ) and i bought from
Everything Cart. I called their tech department this morning and they told me that the sound was normal and it was because the battery's were fully charged and it gave 50 volts or so and when the battery would discharge a bit the sound would stop. As for letting it on all the time there was no problem. They did issued those thing's with the producer before because it was asked a few time.

Re: voltage reducer

You can build one using resistors but could have leads for various voltage.
