Charger issue or battery issue?

3 Attachment(s)
So I had to change the batteries out on my cart and figured now was a good time to do it. We bought the cart used last year. I took a picture of how everything was wired, looked at the battery thread, and then went to town on the batteries. I got everything hooked up and the battery gauge lit up. I took the cart for a quick spin, parked it, and plugged in the charger. The charger fired up and all was well. I was cleaning up my tools and heard a small pop. When I looked over the charger was smoking. It was unplugged immediately.

Having bought the cart used I don't have the utmost confidence in the previous owner due to some other issues we've had. So now I'm curious if this was a wiring issue that caused the charger to blow or was it just the chargers time.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

How did it do last year? Everything OK?

If you hooked everything up just as it was, then you did nothing wrong. Sounds like the transformer, which is terminal, but worth opening up and inspecting in case it was the relay or breaker.

Everything was fine last year other than the batteries didnt hold much of a charge. We mainly use the cart in the neighborhood to go back and forth to the pool. It's a short drive so we were able to make it through the summer. We had a few cases where we had to drive it a bit further and we took the charger with us so we could make it back.

The wire terminals inside the charger get old, corroded, loose, just like on anything else.
Open it up and find out what fried. Probably just a loose terminal.
