Unhappy EZ Go 3PG 89 Marathon ignition problem

89 EZ-GO 3PG Marathon- fresh top end - first overbore piston, new crank seals, fuel pump, super clean stock carb, HEI ignition conversion, new silicone plug wire, bbq(ed) muffler twice. Finally got basket case engine running after discovering reed valve missing..... performance is still poor. Racing my other 87 2PG cart (9 WHP -2PG vs 11 3PG WHP ) around the pasture the "slower" 2PG cart was a third of a lap ahead, rather than behind, the more powerful cart. Both carts have govenor's defeated. When I checked the timing the timing mark was about 70 (seventy!) degrees advanced. I did make sure the cooling fan was properly located on the flywheel keyway mark. When I reversed the pulsar wires (to the correct polarity I ASSUME, I have the HEI ignition module hooked up with a red and blue wire) the timing was probably about 15 degrees advanced and it ran very poorly. It seems to have "fair" low and mid range power but doesn't want to rev freely. No obvious back fire or misfires.... Before I checked the timing I did advance the timing ring about 1/8" and it did seem to run some better. I haven't measured the air gap on the pulsar, with a feeler gauge, but it looks close to .018" spec When we checked the timing I ran the motor as close to 1500 rpm, the manual spec, as I could without a tach.
Secondarily, has anyone fitted a Polaris subie robin motor ignition with mechanical advance to an ezgo subie robin?

No takers on this ?? Could I maybe have wrong flywheel ?? Could the HEI module be advancing the timing ??

I have a Polaris Fuji Robin 244cc motor for sale. Already machined to accept the stock clutch. It will bolt right into the original motor mount holes.
The only problem is that you will lose reverse because of the mechanical advance. It is rated at 18-20hp compared to the ezgo 9-11hp.

1989 you may want to list it in the parts forums K. Better chance of selling it.

I dismantled other 3PG cart and flywheel appears functionally identical - casting numbers however are different - no good explanation of 65 degree advanced timing..... Bad HEI module??

I have the motor in the for sale section for $400 plus shipping. Price is somewhat negotiable.
Does your engine run in reverse. With 15° advanced timing, it shouldn't run in reverse and will have very poor performance in forward.

actually it turns out to be retarded about 75 degrees according to the timing marks using a inductive pick up timing light. (I felt retarded) When I put back the stock ignition it is about 25 degrees off - what most say happens when you reverse the pulsar polarity. or about 40 degrees. If I reverse the polarity it won't start. My guess is maybe the HEI module is retarding the timing as the GM cars it fits doesn't have a vacume advance so it starts off retarded then advances the spark as necessary??? My issue is even with the stock ignition it still shows the timing off a bunch - the manual allows +- 3 degrees and I'm about 25 ish off. Could my cart be using the other timing mark 180 degrees off?? I'm using the pointed indicator on my cooling fan and yes, the fan is on the flywheel correctly to the crank key. I even checked my other PG3 crank to make sure someone didn't put the wrong crank in - the keyways are in the same spot relative to TDC. It did suddenly stop running as good as it did while driving and I had to drive back with choke on like blown seals or base gasket - all new and look OK. This thing has burned up about 60 hours of my "spare" time evenings and weekends - can't believe the hassle. I rebuild my 87 PG2 with no issues other than a seal popped out - we peened the new one in around the alunimum case.

looks like the problem was the cheap-o "master pro" HEI module - put back stock module & coil - timing looked much better and runs "OK" but still slower than my 87..... What's strange is with the HEI it was showing two alternating timing marks on the cooling fan - it kept bouncing back & forth about 25 degrees retarded.???
